Yes the whales are this close! Mele Kohola means "Singing Whale" in Hawaiian and they will entertain you day and night (in season, of course, December-March). Even when the whales are not in season, you'll enjoy the unobstructed bi-coastal views
with waves crashing against the sea wall. There is a view from almost every room in the house including the front and back lanais. The ocean in front of Mele Kohola is very deep and the coastline is shaped in a gentle cove tempting the whales and dolphins
to play very close to shore.
Once inside, you will see the pride and care taken in the classy, upscale, tropical decor, with lots of room for a large family but cozy enough for a romantic getaway. Guests love the oversized chaise lounge and extra-high king bed. If you must work,
there is an office provided for you with a roomy desk and high-speed Internet. The house is located directly on the ocean in the popular neighborhood of Hawaiian Paradise Park, about 15 miles south of Hilo.
Beautiful furnishings and artistic area rugs on parquet wood floors provide style and comfort during your stay. The main part of the house is on the second floor with two bedrooms, two baths, and the office. The large back lanai (deck) has an outdoor
table and barbecue, and there are two front lanais, one off the living area and one off the master bedroom. The first floor has a large open room with living, dining, and kitchenette areas. That level also has a bedroom with a large king bed. The home comes
fully equipped with everything you need in the kitchen, and it has a satellite TV, DVD/CD, and washer/dryer.
Out front is an oceanfront Jacuzzi spa with views along the coastline -- dramatic waves crashing against the cliffs with a view that constantly changes. As an extra bonus, you can start your morning with a beautiful sunrise on the horizon. Yes, this
is paradise!
This entry from the Mele Kohola guestbook was so moving we thought it belonged here rather than on our
Testimonials page:
We arrived at night, the only indication we were on the ocean was the sound of waves breaking against rocks. The air is so clean it feels like breathing in life. The stars were speckled across the sky in surreal abundance. Brilliant sky, rumbling surf, invigorating
air, all that was missing was vision.
That was left for sunrise this morning, where I saw just how close we were to the ocean. We watched the dark waves in the prelight of dawn, throwing themselves against the black lava cliffs, spraying upwards, not so much an attack as a powerful display. Walking
across the twisted, hardened lava, moss fighting for ground, passing the odd, jurassic park plant, hearing the waves collide into the cliffs, I felt a sense of time's expansiveness, of how small this moment was in the universe's scheme, of the formation of
ground and earth and dirt and plants, a patient progression, until hundreds or thousands of years from now nothing will resemble what I now walk on, in this tiny moment of existence in this speck over the billions of years. Nature in its rawest form.
As it grew lighter, the darkness of the water lightened into the brilliant blues and turquoise I am watching right now, waves silvered by the sun. I am feeling contemplative about life and this world. This place makes you reconsider. It instills peace and restlessness
in equal measure.
