Looking for an upgraded, upscale condo? This is it! The owners of Maunaloa Shores 506 spared no expense when it came to choosing appliances, flooring, and furnishings for this recently renovated condo with fabulous Balinese/Asian decor.

One of its most appealing features is the open floor plan. They removed the old-fashioned kitchen and completely redesigned the space with beautiful cabinets that give a much more spacious feeling with unobstructed views to the living room and outdoor lanai (balcony). The kitchen has top-notch stainless steel appliances, a flat-burner cooktop, refrigerator with icemaker, beautiful cherry cabinets, and track lighting.

The beautiful slate flooring in the kitchen and living room is cool, refreshing, and very practical for Hawaii's tropical climate. Wood laminate flooring in both bedrooms adds elegance and the warmth of a home. The living room has a tropical feel with a Balinese influence in the furnishings. The owners designed the lanai as an extension of the living area by providing lots of places to sit outside. The creative addition of a ceiling fan above the lanai adds additional breezes to Hilo's gentle tradewinds.

Enjoy the fantastic ocean view from the living area, lanai, and especially the master bedroom, which has a small desk so you can do a little work while looking out at Hilo Bay. Both bedrooms are equipped with queen Tempur-Pedic mattresses. The guest bedroom has a view of Pu'u 'O'o, the vent of the Kilauea volcano. The updated hallway bathroom, situated between the two bedrooms, is equipped with a combination bathtub/shower with glass doors.

Swimming and snorkeling are just steps away. You have a choice of the on-site swimming pool or take a short walk to Carlsmith Park next door for a dip in the ocean. The lagoons create calm swimming areas and provide protection from the surf. The 4-mile stretch of different swimming coves in this area (called Keaukaha) is a wonderful location to introduce your children to the ocean. If you must work after a day of fun, you'll appreciate the convenience of high-speed Internet from the privacy of your condo.

Year-round rate range is $85 - $175 per night, depending upon party size and dates of your visit. Monthly rate range is $1850 - $2100. Cleaning fee is $95

This is a great condo, located just outside of Hilo. There's a great park just out front with a protected area that's great for swimming. The building is older, but the condo itself has been updated nicely, and comes complete with everything needed.

Great comfortable condo, great view, good location! Nice location for Hilo, safe neighborhood and park next door, good, close parking. Close enough to all the stores and restaurants. Great kitchen with all the things you need. Comfortable beds and chairs on the lani and living area. No air conditioning but we did not need it because you just do flow through ventilation from front to back with open windows. Great to just sit on the lani and enjoy a drink with the view of the lagoon and bay. Quite a jungle view as well and a view of the steam from the volcano to the south in the distance. Quite a drive to the more tourist type places near Kona, those are all day trips. Check out the warm/hot pools east of Pahoa and check out the lava flows. Got to see the volcano and National Park, bring a jacket and hiking shoes! Overall, a great stay! People don't drive too much "Aloha" on the Big Island and Hilo. It's like they learned to drive in Los Angeles, so that was a little let down. Really enjoyed it all, however.

We had printed the pictures off the internet and had them on our refrigerator door for six months in anticipation of our stay. We were actually concerned that we would be disappointed. But, just the opposite! What a great condo, and situated in a fantastic location. The ocean and lagoon view are incredible. All the parks nearby make it a wonderland for adventures without ever getting in your car. The island decor is perfect and comfortable. The owners have thought of everything to make your stay convenient and rewarding...even boogie boards!

The location was wonderful! The view from our condo at the lagoon was perfect.The condo itself was clean and the kitchen was very well stocked with glassware, plates and cooking utensils. We had plenty of bath and kitchen towels. I would definitely stay here again. The furniture and bed could use some upgrading, though.

There were only two things that could have been better: a) a new toilet that flushes properly and b) the addition of a dishwasher. Other than that the condo is great!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this condo. The inside of the unit was clean, comfortably furnished, with additional amenities (beach towels, boogie boards, coolers, fully equipped kitchen, TV, internet), and a fabulous view of the lagoons and ocean. The pool had an ongoing algae problem and was only intermittently open, so don't count on it... but never mind, Keaukaha has lots of beach parks for swimming and snorkeling. Condo neighbors and manager were friendly and the condo is convenient to restaurants, stores, etc... If you want to wake up and swim with turtles every day, and relax on the lanai with a drink and a gorgeous view at sunset, this is the place for you.
We couldn't have asked for a better location. Just had a great time

This was our 2nd stay at Mauna Loa Shores, so we decided to try another unit and like the 1st stay, we had another memorable stay. Our daughters even got to swim w/a turtle that frequents Carlsmith Beach. The only thing we missed from the other unit was a screen door for the lanai. It helps w/the cross ventilation while not having to get bitten by mosquitos. Other than that, it was very enjoyable. So much that we extended our stay one more day. Su was professional as always w/our reservations.

Great location with lagoon in the backyard for aqua walking or snorkling or just swimming. Close to Hilo. Nice furnishings. The armoire on the lanai crowds the space a bit. Make sure to close the bedroom windows during rains. Had a great (tho short) time.

After I booked the condo my confirmation advised me that there was a $10.00 a day fee for the use of the amenities! This on top of a Non-Refunable $34.00 Damage Fee (Not Refundable) & a $95.00 Cleaning Fee for the 3 nights made this a very expensive place to stay! The contract and the note on the refrigerator also suggested we tip the maid! Wish we had been able to afford to - the unit was very clean.
Upon checking in the young man at the counter confirmed their policies with me in a very demanding voice kind of a "I dare you to challenge me" voice. My guess is that people have challenged this policy. My comment was that I was not happy about it since I wasn't aware of it until after I had already booked the unit. Neither he or the woman behind the desk seemed to care.
Aside from this, the building is a cement-prison -like-old building. The unit we stayed in was very nice, comfy and enjoyable to be in with a wonderful view.

  Wow, we are very concerned about your review. There is NO counter in which to check in and no "young man" should be taking $10! This is NOT part of the Mauna Loa Shores complex NOR the Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rental company! In fact, this building has NO front office. Our cleaning fee and Damage Waiver fee are very clearly stated up front in the confirmation process. We will be investigating your claims of a "front desk". Mahalo for the feedback. Great view of the ocean, and proximity to swimming & snorkeling.
The condo is nicely appointed, and well stocked with everything you need, including the kitchen.
On the negative side, the pool was closed during most of our visit due to deck maintenance, but didn't need to be. Their work didn't affect the pool itself, and often they were absent for long periods.
There was no evidence of a property manager around to help, or answer questions.

We have stayed at Mauna Loa shores several times, in different units. Unit 506 is the best so far - wonderful kitchen facilities, view and amenities provided by the owners including beach chairs.

Add a folding towel rack for towels....and a few more towels. we had to buY a few more for our stay. the bathroom had mold so we took care of some of it. otherwise...great place..

We booked this place at the last minute - the staff were INCREDIBLY helpful with making sure we had everything we needed. The condo is lovely - beautifully decorated and super clean. Mahalo for a wonderful stay at Mauna Loa Shores! Beautifully decorated and maintained property with a great view and great location. Snorkeled with honu right out back and saw the volcano from the balcony out front! My only suggestions for management: screen doors for the front and porch, fix the slow-to-drain bathtub (we bought a plunger and gave it a shot to no avail), spend a bit more to decorate the second bedroom. A big mahalo again!

I have no doubt this unit is one of the nicest in the condo building. It's very well furnished and has all the supplies. Also, the view was great. Downside is this condo building is pretty dated and it shows on the common elements of the building. There were some minor problems with the tub and toilet draining slowly. Tub also had a bit of black mold on the grout - not uncommon with this much humidity.

Overall I'd stay there again and would pass the location on to friends. I would hesitate before booking other units in this same building - if they are not as updated as the unit we stayed in, it could be pretty rough.

Although there was no A/C we had a nice time there! The kitchen was fully equiped and everything was spotless.
The view is outstanding, the larger room comfortable, including bed. However, the smaller bedroom is dark and airless. Also the floor overall was dirty. We liked the furniture generally .

A very nice condo overall despite the building in general being fairly old. Unit 506 is very well appointed and apart from the tired bathroom is very well equipped with everything a family could want. Location is great and very close to water and Rain Forrest setting.

Hi, The rental was in a great location. I wish that it had had 2 baths, but I knew that it didn't going into the rental. I liked the fact that there was good security with the locked entrance to the elevator at night. Felt secure in the building. Would have liked bottom up windo shades in the bedroom that faced the walkway on the outside of the unit. People like to glance in when they are walking by. A dishwasher would have been nice too, but we made out ok without one. All in all a very nice rental, would like to come back again.

We'd always stayed in a private home on our visits over the last 10 years, but returned this time to share our daughter's PhD celebration from UH! We had a wonderful time and the condo is lovely! Only one kitchen towel and half roll of paper towels for four nights wasn't sufficient.Master bed above expectations; second bed like any other rental. One centipede, an unwelcome occupant, but common at beach altitudes.Caulking around the tub unsightly but could easily be corrected. Lovely breezes from the lanai and awesome views from there and the master bedroom!! Beautifully decorated for the small space and comfortable. Thank you, 506!

We loved our stay. The first day, we went down to the lagoon and I was hugged by a honu! He snuck up behind me and wrapped his flipper around my legs. Our 5 yr. old daughter was amazed. Waking up to the view of the lagoon every morning was wonderful. The kitchen was well equipped, though we did miss having a coffee grinder. We did make use of the sushi mat with some fresh ahi!
Our friend stayed in #306 and I can say that #506 is nicer and more updated. #306 had the trashiest, ripped curtains! Our friend said he wants to rent #506 when he returns and we can say we would definitely stay here again.

It was an idyllic location. We fall asleep to soft chirping from the coqui frogs and wake up to soft birdsong. The lagoons are just below the building with the ocean waves lapping the shores. We took breakfast on the lanai and I could point to the rainforest and the ocean and the sky from our lanai. It was very nice indeed. I would definitely return. Mgmt was very accommodating and very accessible. This was my first time in a vacation condo rental and totally loved it. A few minuses - because the doors to the rooms and bathroom was not solid doors, one could hear everything going on in the condo. With a baby, I was looking for some acoustic privacy to let her sleep early. It worked out fine for us. The doors are jalousie doors so lets in air and lotsa sound. Anyways I would stay here again!

The building is old and dingy, but this is fairly common for most rentals in Hilo, even the big hotels. The location is very nice. Just next door to the Carlsmith park. Great view from the lanai. This unit (#506) itself is nicely furnished. Very modern kitchen and appliances, and the furniture are comfy. Now for the negative parts: (1) there is no dishwasher. If you're used to having a dishwasher, it's a total drag having to wash dishes by hand on your vacation. The kitchen is newly renovated with granite countertop and stainless steel appliances. Not sure why the owner chose to forego a dishwash. (2) there's no screen door to the big sliding door to the lanai. So in order to avoid bugs, which there are plenty in a wet place like Hilo, you have to keep the sliding door closed. Combining with the fact that there's no AC in this unit, it becomes somewhat unbearable on a hot & humid day. Again, not sure why the owner choose not to install one, since I see that several other reviewers also complained about this. (3) the tiled flooring is fairly new, but feels like the tiles are more suitable for outdoor use. If you wear your outdoor shoes inside, I guess it doesn't matter. But we are used to taking our shoes off at the door and going bare foot inside the house. The tile surfaces are fairly rough and uncomfortable to walk on. Dining table and chairs also wobble because the floor is uneven.

The general condition of the unit was dirty. Mold was growing on the tile in the bathtub. The toilet bowl looked as if it had not been cleaned in weeks. The white handle on the refrigerator was full of dirt and looked more like the color dark gray than white. The floor also had alot of dirt on it. When you walked barefooted your foot turned black. There is no excuse for the unit to be so dirty when we are charged a cleaning fee. A new cleaning company needs to be found that actually CLEANS the unit. Also beach towels would be a nice addition.

Place is pretty dated. #506 is in acceptable shape, 'cept the bath which is kind of scummy and really does need to be redone (mold, scum, grunge (no exhaust fan)).

  We are working with the owner of the unit to re-do the bathroom. Rest assured it is clean! Update: the original shower tiles will be replaced by mid-October, 2011. Also FYI two excellent reviews for MLS506 came in after this guest's stay and they both LOVED the place! Mahalo, Hawaii Holiday Management

Nice unit, dated building

Great stay

The view is outstanding, the larger room comfortable, including bed. However, the smaller bedroom is dark and airless. Also the floor overall was dirty. We liked the furniture generally .
