Hidden along the sunny shores of Kapoho, Shangri-La's four enchanting Bali cottages rest on about half an acre of crystal-clear, naturally heated bathing lagoons. Beneath lush coconut and tropical palms, the healing waters average 90 degrees year-round and are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or therapeutic bathing. There are also thousands of tropical fish to entertain you.

Just outside the volcanic rock walls surrounding the estate, you can snorkel with sea turtles in one of the Pacific's richest and most protected wildlife preserves. Or, take a 15-minute drive to historic old Pahoa and sample some of the island's most eclectic boutique shops and restaurants. This unique property provides an irreplaceable sanctuary to slow down, soothe the soul, and experience "Old Hawaii" island living at its very best.

Shangri-La comprises a collection of unique structures:

Round House: A 600-square-foot Bali-style structure for yoga, meditation, exercise, massage, meetings, entertaining, or just relaxing in front of the TV. There is also a full-size foldout bed.

The Pavilion: A full-amenities kitchen, 2 bedrooms with king beds, and 2 baths. The larger bath is outdoor tropical-style with a sunken Jacuzzi tub, sauna and shower.

The Island Bedroom: Open to the tropical breezes, this unique Bali Hut features a queen bed on its own island beneath the stars.

The Guest House: A lovely private cottage perched just above the lagoon at the edge of the property. Features a double bed, kitchenette, dining area, outdoor bath and large deck. Use of Guest House included for parties of 5 or 6; available for parties of 4 or less for an additional $100 per night.

We loved taking the early morning swims in our private naturally heated lagoon. The privacy of the estate is a wonderful freeing feeling. You get the sensation that you are in your own exclusive piece of heaven. The proximity of the tidal pools was so close that we could go every day. Their beauty is spectacular, words can't describe the experience. I thnk only a painters brush could do it justice. The grounds and facilities of Shangri-la are enchanting. From the amazing thermally heated lagoon,the fabulous outdoor showers, and the tremendously stocked outdoor kitchen, we knew we were in for a treat the moment we stepped into the gate. So much so
we know we will return someday. It is an oasis to rejuvenate the soul and worth every penny!

Everything about Shangri-La was absolutely amazing, from the fish stocked lagoon right outside the bedroom/living area, to the well thought-out layout of the buildings.

It ranks right at the top with all of our other vacations, from Thailand to Africa, at a quarter of the distance from home.

The only 4 star rating we gave was for the distance to the grocery store, (about 15 minutes) which had to be planned well in advance.

Thank you for a wonderful, pleasant experience that our family most thoroughly enjoyed. If we ever visit the big Island again, we will be back.

Our breath was taken away when we entered the gates of Shangri La. Our family enjoys getting off the beaten paths of normal tourist routes and explore. Staying in Kapoho allowed us the opportunity to be with the locals, but at the same we were close enough to visit several normal tourist places such as rainbow falls, beaches, Hilo, etc. One trip that every family should take is the boat ride to the volcano. The four hour boat tour of the volcano and fishing trip absolutely was a trip no one in our family will ever forget. Celebrating two children graduating from college and our 30th anniversary, staying at Shangri La was the best decision we could have made and would do it again in a heart beat.

The real value in this vacation rental is the property itself, it is a secluded unique piece of Hawaii. Although I may furnish it differently with a comfortable conversation / seating area (which it lacks) it truly is an oasis. The lagoon, landscaping, outdoor bathroom/ shower and sleeping pavilion put his property well and above others. The indoor/outdoor kitchen is tropical and well equipped. The bug screens on all windows were a welcome addition, not found in all vacation rentals. Although there is some mention of a new 2 story home built next door that could compromise privacy, thier view to the property is extremely limited and caused us no concern. The property manager was a delight and eager to assist in any way possible - even providing the wines we asked for on check in!Don't miss the Vacationland Tide pools, they are magical and only minutes away.

Enjoyed Shangri-La very much. Swimming in the lagoon transfixed all for hours every day. Black sand beach with great waves 20 minutes away. Unfortunately, there was construction noise from nearby property during the day. Without that, our stay would have been perfect.

Stayed here for 8 nights in Oct. 2010 The video that is online says it all. Slow down and relax. That is what Shangri-La offers.
It was Sub divided so you can hear the ocean. But can't see it. If you could before, we are not sure. But WE thought you could.
Also wish the pond had more tropical fish as opposed Koi and 100's of other black ones we dont recall the name of. We seen 2 tropical fish.

Melissa met us at check in. She was a JOY and knows the place inside & out. Then? we never heard from her again. THATS what we wanted. Privacy. Thank you Melissa. Yet if you needed her, she was just a phone call away.

The outside bed is not that comfortable but you can not BEAT spleeping outside. Also the outside shower is OUTstanding!! However needs some work down for privacy now that a new house was built on the sub divided lot.

We would return to Shangri-La again for sure. Oh! The Gekos? They are very cool even IN the round house.

Shangri-La is a very unique property. Though we fully expected the volcanic heated lagoon to be a landscape highlight of the property and atmosphere, we didn't expect we'd do as much lounging, floating and snorkeling in the lagoon as we did. Likewise, we had more fun feeding the fish in the lagoon than we expected. The large circular room was also a relaxing room to stay in. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor shower - especially in the evening when the nocturnal flowers where filling the air with fragrance. Not every day you shower among orchids under palm trees, etc. The hot tub and the sauna were also relaxing. I would have liked a hammock - maybe next time.
Our original plan was to make evening meals at Shangri-La. However we went into Pahoa and found Kaleo's Grill. It was great, so we ate there two of the three nights. Though we did venture down to Champagne Pond a short walk nearby, we enjoyed the lagoon on property much more.
All in all, a very unique experience.

The property is, in one word, amazing. Extremely private we felt like we entered another world when we walked through the gates.

We all enjoyed the endless snorkelling and relaxing on the hammock.

We loved the house. It's a very unique spot. The unusal set up is great. The out door shower is wonderful and the warm water lagoon is great too. One note - it is "sold" as being absolutely private but it's not. The house next door has views of a lot of the property. One night we were even "lite up" by someone walking around their yard and setting off the security lights. We saw them clearly so they could see us clearly too. We were also awakened one morning by vocies and foot steps. The house is only 20 feet or so from the bedrooms. The bamboo fences don't cut off much at that distance. The outdoor shower is within view and the outside breakfast table is viewable by another house. We are old and don't really care who sees what but the "sale" is that you have a "piece of Eden" . Eden didn't come with close neighbors who could see you if you where "indisposed"! Leave no doubt that we loved our experience and would go back in an instant!

here are the amazing things
1. all the people i dealt with for this stay
2. the property itself... extraordinary!
3. the lagoon... who doesn't like to swim in warm water (just right, not hot) with fishes giving you little kisses on your legs
3. the bedrooms, outdoor bed, hammock... all wonderful and beautiful places to relax
4. the grand room .. big enough for yoga or just watching t.v. (i would have liked more channels though).. i know - who watches t.v. on vacation? .. i do
5. the kitchen - everything one could want... we even had our groceries bought for us and in the fridge upon our arrival!
6. the sauna and japanese hot tub (some nights after the lagoon we were chilled and these were perfect!
7. last but certainly not least - the energy of the whole place... welcoming, calming and playful..
we couldn't have asked for more... it actually was beyond our expectations and we will stay there again!

We had a wonderful time in Shangri La. The pons were fantasic and swimming with the fish each day is something we will always remember. The only sad thing, is the new two story house built next door this past June takes away from the privacy and the feeling you are in the Garden of Eden.

A great place for our fmaily of 8 to stay. We loved being able to swim anytime we wanted and the privacy of the property. Brady was great and gave us the royal treatment. This place is very rustic and you become one with nature and the geckos.
Had a great time. the location and snorkeling were fantastic. the kitchen was well appointed. the only downside was no air conditioning. it was a little warmer than i would like for sleeping a few nights.

No air conditioning was a bad thing, other then one slippery stair that my boyfriend slipped on and crack his leg and elbow we were totally satisfied. Water was great and the caretaker was very helpful. It made for a Good visit.

Great rustic getaway

Had a great time. the location and snorkeling were fantastic. the kitchen was well appointed. the only downside was no air conditioning. it was a little warmer than i would like for sleeping a few nights.
