The front lanai of Hale o Kamakani boasts sweeping ocean views!

Mahalo for considering Hale o Kamakani (house of upward breeze). Located in the upscale community of Puna Beach Palisades on the pristine scenic Puna coast, Hale o Kamakani just a 5 min stroll to Kehena black sand beach.

As you enter Hale o Kamakani you will notice the Asian-Pacific theme in its décor. This spacious home boasts two master bedrooms, each with a queen size bed and ensuite bath. The living & dining area, which features a Koa dining table and hand carved Chinese sofa & chairs, creates a warm open feeling. The new modern kitchen with top of the line stainless steal appliances, mahogany cabinets and counter tops is inviting and appealing. One of the highlights of Hale o Kamakaini is its large lanai that spans the length of the home, giving you an un obstructed 180 degree view of the Pacific ocean, which allows the wonderful tropical ocean breeze to flow throughout the home. This lanai is the perfect place to dine and take in the magical Puna sky.

Hale o Kamakani is just a 5 min walk to the (clothing optional) Kehena black sand beach, where if you're lucky you can swim with the spinner dolphins. The home is a 15 minute drive to “Ahalanui Beach Park” (a naturally warmed 95 degree seawater pond) as well as Wai Opae Protected tide-pools in Kapoho where you will find some of the best swimming and snorkeling that can be found on the east of our island. Beginning or ending your day in either of these beautiful and unique places is an experience that is not to be missed. Just 7 minutes away is Uncle Robert’s, a great place to take in the local fair, with its kava bar and local Hawaiian entertainment.

Puna Beach Palisades is 50 minutes from Volcano National Park, 35 minutes from Hilo airport, and 12 minutes from the quaint village of Pahoa, which has some of the best dining in our area featuring Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Tex-Mex and local Hawaiian resturants.

Old Hilo town is a must visit with its colorful farmer's markets, shopping, interesting museums to tell you all about the history of this side of the island.

Rates start at $115 to $130 a night for two guests with a $100-$150 cleaning fee.

I'd rate this place near perfect, especially for two couples, as the layout is very private. Everything was handled with the greatest of professionalism and kindness. I'd definitely rent there again!

We had a great time, this property is very nice. We had a cat there to welcome us and she just made her self at home. There was also alot of Geco's and frogs. We loved this house.

a guest from Suwanee, GA recommends this vacation rental

Overall the vacation rental was great: the property was beautiful and clean; we fell asleep to a beautiful sunset and awoke to an equally beautiful sunrise, which we had a great view of through the large windows around the property. The house is very peaceful and there is a friendly vibe in the neighborhood.

The only small hiccup was when we checked in. For some reason there was confusion about how we would get the keys to the property, even though we had sent an email confirming the time of our arrival. Before we drove out to the property from Hilo Airport, I called the management company to confirm how we would get the keys. The person who answered didn't know and said someone would call us back. No one ever did, and the house is in a pretty isolated area for cell phone service. Turns out that even though they knew that cell phone service was spotty (and even though no one had told us to do so) they still expected us to call them once we reached the house so that a neighbor could let us in. It was pitch black and there were no lights on the street or the roads. It was only about 10:30 but everyone in the neighborhood was fast asleep and we were almost positive that we would end up having to sleep in our car in the driveway. It was only by waking up a kind neighbor who let us use her phone were we able to finally get in touch with the person with the keys.

Up until that small hiccup, the reservation process had been very smooth. And everything was smooth sailing afterward; it was just that one bump in the beginning that marred the overall experience for us.

Love the place-quiet-except for the rain. We did not get the message early enough for entry because they left it on our home phone (we were not home). Should be told everything earlier since we were prepaid! The beauty of the area is amazing especially coming from the Kona side which is not as green and treesy.

Maury W from Tremtealeau, WI recommends this vacation rental

Hale O Kamakani is a beautifully furnished home with expansive ocean views from a full house length lanai. There were a number of extra amenities such as Hawaiian books and CDs, games, cooler, grill, umbrellas and beach towels allowing us to pack light for our month stay. Juan gave us a warm welcome. The directions to the property and how to contact Juan were clear. We booked earlier than the folks who had problems with cell phone reception and contacting Juan so I am assuming they did not read these arrival instructions carefully.

We loved the lush tropical greenery on this quieter side of the island. It is obvious that Hale O Kamakani is a beloved home and the price was reasonable for the quality. When we had a minor problem with the icemaker, Juan and Robert, the owner, were quick to respond. The neighborhood was quiet even on New Year's Eve!

We enjoyed snorkeling at Waipoe Tidal Ponds 11 miles to the North, the thermal baths and Issac Hale Park. Kehena Beach, which is a short walk away, is gorgeous but as a former lifeguard instructor I would not recommend it for any but the very strongest swimmers and only in calm waters. There is a steep shore break there and I felt a very strong undertow. The last week we were in Puna, a 29 year old man drowned there. Six locals went out to assist this young man and had to be rescued. I can not say enough for this aloha spirit where these folks risked their lives to help a stranger or the Hawaiian fire department. These are people I would love to know and have as neighbors.

Again, my family and I loved the beauty, the warmth and tranquility we found at Hale O Kamakani. We knew the hustle and bustle of Kona was not our style but were able to enjoy several day trips there and to Volcano National Park. This was our fifth trip to the Big Island. Our stay at Robert's home was the best and made for a memorable holiday.

Thomas H from Calgary, Alberta recommends this vacation rental

    Starting first with the greeting by Juan;
    - very friendly and personable
    - made us feel relaxed and in fact just told us
to make ourselves feel as if we are at home
    - The croki frogs gave great evening concerts from about dusk to about 11pm and then they just went to sleep
    - Very lay back area of the Bog Island, as Juan said it's a bit like San Francisco - Berkley 1969 [Hippies]
    - We did most of the touring in booklet, and saw most sights ... incredible how after the 2012 Lava flow at Kapahoa, people still choose to live on or near the same area
    - the house / neighbor hood cat was lots of fun
    - it was great we had a car as the place is nice and secluded which makes it safe [but no corner store to walk to ... which was perfect]
    - after about 2 days we were completely relaxed from our high paced jobs
    - missed having a pool, so if there is another place in your family of vacation rentals, please advise for future consideration?
    - the neighbours with the bees are really nice and we had a nice meeting / brief visit with then
    Many Mahalos,
    Tom and Rena

Scott H from Brooklyn, NY recommends this vacation rental

I loved this house. Both rooms where equally appointed and situated with ocean views, making it great to share without guilt. Also rooms are far apart for ultimate privacy. Quiet neighbors.
Only problem for me was the neighborhood rooster at 5AM. Nothing that can be done about that as it happens in many areas of HI.
Really nice interior and the bed in the green & tan room was heavenly.
