We had a wonderful time. The location was beautiful. Grounds were park-like. We felt very much at home in the house.
If you want a restful vacation in a beautiful setting, this is it. We only stayed a week, and did not bother to go to the Kona side of the island. There was plenty to see and do locally. The town of Pahoa is cute, funky, and very friendly. There is actually some night life with live music. Also, after dark you can watch the lava flow from what's left of the Kalapana neighborhood. If you have a very good camera with a telephoto lense (we don't) you can see the lava creeping over the mountain. Also, don't miss the view of Kilauea erupting from the Jagger Museum at Volcano National Park AT NIGHT. You can see much more than during the day.
Daytime, go swim in one of several warm inlets from the ocean. You'll find directions in the guide books, or just ask around.
For groceries, go to the farmers markets for produce--it's way cheaper than the stores. We practically lived on papaya and apple bananas. But try the eggfruit and sapoda if you can find it. It's not grown commercially, and it's yummy!
