The house was a bit further from Hilo than we had anticipated before arriving. This made commuting to and from our touristy activities a bit more tedious. We thoroughly enjoyed the house and beautiful ocean view and hot tub. The high winds and rain limited our use of the lanai the first few days but weather is always unpredictible. Having a fully functioning kichen was great. The library was appreciated too with many books pertaining to Island life. Generally a very beautiful spot to vacation. We would definitely recommend this property for anyone wanting a quiet retreat.
Every thing was great. The only things that I see need improving is easier access to the backyard/hot tub, and also recycling cans, bottles etc. Besides that this was an awesome stay I am already planning on a future stay at this same house. The view is incredible and the privacy is all I read it was. Thanks again for a great and memorable stay.
Hale Pukana La is one of the best secrets of Hawaii. Quiet views of the Pacific and whales off your lanai. I'm almost reluctant to tell anyone for fear this place becomes too popular. But if you want a week in old Hawaii, this is it.
This is a wonderful getaway on the Big Island. The house was great and well appointed. The tree frogs from the forest made for great evening entertainment and overnight sleep accompaniments. The home is very close to local points of interest(hot ponds, volcano, ocean, forest reserve).
Could you please put extra lock on front door and Lanai. Spa also needs a lock, we did not have time to use the spa because we went "holoholo' / tour daily.
Big House. Great location right on the Ocean. Everything we needed was in the house, which was very clean, filled with great decor and wonderful books. One tiny complaint, and this is really nitpicking, the deck, or Lanai, was built with NO STAIRS going down to the lawn/ hottub/ barbeque area. With the garage door broken as it was during our visit, you have to go out the front door, out to the street, and go way around through the driveway. If you're trying to barbeque or use the hottub, it's extremely inconvenient. Also the frogs are quite a racket at night and with no a.c. you want those windows open. But really, I am nitpicking here. This is a wonderful place to stay in every other way and has my 5 star recomendation.
The property was great! The house was great! It was also central to a lot of activities such as snorkeling, lava watching, rainforest hiking, swimming, etc.
We stayed in this lovely vacation home about two years ago and decided to return. This home is VERY private - an undeveloped lot on one side and a park on the other side. The huge lanai is perfect for relaxing and listening to the sound of the surf. The furnishings and Hawaiian art work are great. The last time we stayed here the owner provided a wonderful CD library of Hawaiian music - no CDs this time (maybe they kept "disappearing"), but no problem as we brought our own Iz CDs. This home is perfect for a couple that likes a bit of room (that's us), or a small family. Since there isn't a second full bath it might not work as well for two couples. The kitchen is very nice and although we ate out for lunch a few times, we prepared our own dinner most evenings. We love the location - we spent five days on the Kona side of the Big Island, then the balance of our trip here and loved every minute. There are many unusual things to see in the area, including the hot ponds, the black beaches, the tide pools, and, of course, Volcano National Park, which is a short drive of about 30 miles. Don't miss the farmer's markets - the one in Hilo on Wednesdays and Saturdays is fabulous. There is also a local farmers market that really takes you back in time to the 60s! We love staying at this home and will be back as soon as we can arrange (and afford) another trip to Hawaii. I would highly recommend this great vacation rental. Also the property management company that handles this property is very professional and helpful. They accommodated us with a late checkout since no one was checking in the day of our departure. We had a midnight flight out of Kona and the late checkout allowed us to relax and enjoy our last day in Hawaii.
The home was so wonderful we hated leaving it to go out and about to see all the area has to offer. The house is beautifully decorated and the owners have thought of every need. Breakfast on the lanai every morning, looking out at the ocean, was amazing! We saw whales almost every day and there were many rainbows over the ocean. Watching the sun rise over the ocean was a never to be forgotten treat. We loved everything about our stay.
We enjoyed a wonderful week at Hale Pukana La drinking in the lush beauty of the garden side of The Big Island. The house is situated so that you have a 180 degree view of the ocean and feel as if there are no other people around. We saw whales right off our location on several days. It is often windy and cloudy but we enjoyed the weather and saw the sun at least part of every day. Proximity to the volcano was great. The volcano is fabulous sight-seeing! The house itself was luxurious and has great beds for a wonderful night's sleep listening to that pounding surf. We'd come again in a heartbeat!
we were amazed by the ocean view it was spectacular,we really enjoyed sitting on the huge deck watching the sunrise and listeneing to the waves crashing against the black lava rock. Its not a place for children there is no beach. The house had everything we needed, lots of books on the big island which as great. Its a bit of the beaten path but the view and the house is definately worth it.
Absolutely gorgeous house. The pictures don't do it justice. Each room was nicely accented. The neighbors were great. The house itself was on a scenic beach-cliff lot but boy, was it in the Boonies. We built a nice bon fire one night and roasted marshmellos. It was just like camping on the beach with all the comforts of home. I do plan to return with my wife and I only. This is such a romantic environment. The sound effects were amazing! Frogs, crashing waves, birds songs, and soothing tropical breezes. Thank you for the lists of things to do and places to see. It really helped when planning our activities.
had a great stay ... Mahalo
My husband and I stayed at Hale Pukana lafor 4 nights. It was located in a nice, safe neighborhood with a spectacular ocean view. The lanai is huge and because it is covered, you can still sit outside and enjoy the view even if it is raining! The house may not work for 2 couples as there is only 1 bathroom with a shower and tub. There is another half bathroom with just a toilet and sink, but would work well for a couple with a small family. I had to mop the entire house because the tile was dirty. We also had to clean the huge picture windows because you could barely see out. The kitchen could use some updating , but overall the house is very nice. The lanai and the view are the strong points for this house. The photos on the internet do not do it justice.
We liked the 2nd house better but don't recall the name.
